‘Theology & Breakfast’,  No. 1-07/12/2026, Hansen:

((An evil EYE, what is it?)

Matthew 6:22-23

King James Version

22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

Often in ‘Reformed Theology’, this verse (Matthew 6:22) is interpreted as a call for single-minded devotion to God. The “pure” (or “sound”) eye represents a heart solely fixed on God’s kingdom without being divided by greed or divided loyalties.

((Matt 15:18 “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart…”))

Key Verses

  • Romans 8:8: “So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God”. (Being “in the flesh” refers to the unregenerate, fallen human state). ((Cannot please God, and above all do not want to.))
  • Hebrews 11:6: “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” ((Can the non-elect have faith that pleases God? Can the elect have faith that does not please God.))
  • 1 Corinthians 2:14: “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” ((Thou shalt not murder can not be understood?))
  • Jeremiah 17:9: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”   ((Follow your heart? Should the elect ever follow their heart?))

Here is one Reformed perspective on the Sermon on the Mount:

  • The Eye as the Heart’s Focus: The “eye” is a metaphor for your spiritual vision, intentions, and desires. In the original Greek, “pure” or “sound” is often translated as single. It means having one unclouded, undivided, and sincere focus. ((Have you ever been around someone that sees perversion in almost all that they view?))

((You can not serve 2 masters. But should we ever try?))   [[A psychology test I took, they made me take it twice. It Kept asking me to compromise.]]

  • The “Bad” Eye is Greed: In ancient Hebrew and biblical contexts, a “bad eye” or “evil eye” was a common idiom for a stingy, greedy, or envious person. Jesus is warning that if your focus is on material wealth (the “treasures on earth” mentioned immediately prior) rather than God, your life is spiritually blind.

Keep your eyes on the things of Heaven.

James 1:17, which states: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (Consistent)

  • The Whole Body is Full of Light: When your singular focus is on God, righteousness, and heavenly treasure, every part of your life (actions, decisions, and character) is illuminated by divine wisdom. Conversely, a covetous mind plunges the whole life into profound spiritual darkness.

Isaiah 26:3: You (God) will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”   [[Song Trust and Obey, …..for there is no other way…to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.]]

  • This perspective aligns heavily with the Reformed understanding of the Lordship of Christ—you cannot have one eye on God and the other on worldly things. ((Double Minded)) Reformed commentators like John Calvin, frequently emphasize that true purity requires an utterly undivided affection for God.

((Peter, do you love me? You know I love you Lord, I believe, Lord help my unbelief.))

NOTE – I will have this up on the TV Screen during our time.
